Ubuntu MATE Trash Association

This page was last updated on January 12, 2020.

This is the second time my Ubuntu MATE trash became “corrupted” by somehow being associated with Eye of MATE Image Viewer rather than Caja. The last time it happened, I just left it that way until I installed a new version of Ubuntu MATE. Since it happened again, I suspect this is some sort of ongoing issue that others may also be experiencing, so I decided to figure out how to fix it. For those of you who also have this issue, here are the steps to restore the trash to its default behavior:

  1. Open the MATE menu.
  2. Left-click on the System sub-menu.
  3. Left-click on Control Center.
  4. Left-click on Preferred applications in the Personal section.
  5. Left-click the System tab.
  6. Left-click on Eye of MATE Image Viewer in the File manager section.
  7. Left-click on Caja.
  8. Left-click the Close button.

Obligatory Happy Ending

And they all lived happily ever after. The end.
